Although the names are often used interchangeably, Apple Music is a modern subscription-based streaming service, while iTunes was originally a media player and digital store.
Since the launch of macOS Catalina, iTunes on the Mac has been split into separate apps, but on Windows, the program still exists in a combined form for now.
Key Differences
Subscription vs. Ownership: With Apple Music, you pay a monthly fee for unlimited access to millions of songs. Through the iTunes Store, you purchase individual songs or albums that remain your property permanently.
Availability on Windows: You can still use iTunes on a Windows PC to manage podcasts and audiobooks. However, for music and TV shows, Apple has now also released the separate Apple Music app and Apple TV app for Windows.
Device Management: Previously, iTunes was the only place to sync your iPhone or iPad. Now, on a Mac, this is done through Finder, while Windows users can use the new Apple Devices app for this purpose.
Costs and Packages
Apple Music subscriptions are now also part of Apple One, where you bundle multiple services:
Apple
Individual: €10.99 per month for Apple Music (or €19.95 in the Apple One package).
Family: €16.99 per month (or €25.95 in the Apple One package for up to 6 people).
